Question Number: 781

League Specific

RE: Over 30 - Rec. League Adult

Bill O'Brien of , IL asks...

What is USSF policy regarding replaying abandoned (not terminated) matches? Our league rules state that a match can be considered complete after the second half kickoff. If a match is abandoned (due to weather, etc.) before that time and is rescheduled at a later date, should the match be replayed from the beginning or resumed from the point where it was previously abandoned?

Answer provided by Referee Victor Matheson

There are no FIFA/USSF rules on this. This is solely up to the determination of the league. The way I figure it there are 3 options for any game that does not go the full 90 minutes. You can consider the partial game as a complete match. (FIFA did this last week after rioting in Zimbabwe forced the termination of a WC qualifier. This also occurred in MLS a month ago when the lights failed in DC.) You could also restart the match from where you left off. Finally, you could completely replay the match. Usually if a match is replayed it is replayed from the beginning, but there is nothing in the rules that states it has to be that way.
