Question Number: 20503Law 10 - Method of Scoring 11/13/2008RE: Competitive Adult Jose Sandoval of New Britain, CT USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 1040 1> The goalkeeper after a diving save is lying outstretched on the ground with one hand on top of the ball. An attacker runs up and kicks the ball into the goal. The referee should allow the goal if no contact was made with the keeper? 2> Which of the following is NOT necessary for a goal to be scored? a. the ball has completely crossed the goal line. b. the ball was played by an attacking player. c. the ball is under the crossbar and between the uprights when it crosses the goal line. Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino 1. No. If the keeper has the ball pinned to the ground with one hand he may not be challenged. If the opponent kicks the ball into the net without touching the keeper, it's an indirect free kick for the keeper's team taken where the ball was or from anywhere inside the goal area if the ball was in the goal area. 2.Is this some sort of quiz? Of course, the ball may be played by ANY player if the ball is live and a goal may be scored. A player may not score on themselves on any RESTART. And, you left out that the ball must be in play at when the goal is scored. And no other infringements of the Law may have occurred.

In 1) if the referee allows the goal, he's ignoring Law 12 and the decisions attached which carry the weight of the Law. Tsk. That's not bending the rules, it's flat out breaking them. Besides, this isn't American football, where the holder tees up the ball for the kicker - wrong sport. In 2) anyone with any experience in the game knows the ball can enter the goal and be scored by any number of legal means, only one of which includes a play by an attacker. And anyone who has ever read Law 10 will know what is necessary.

Such action might also be cautionable as reckless or USB A goal is awarded unless the opposing team has committed an infringment before either a or c the answer is B. Own goals or rebounds off referees still count!
