Question Number: 19289

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 6/6/2008

RE: select Under 14

Mike Timm of Granite Falls, WA USA asks...

player gets hit in the face with ball, goes down crying, ref blows whistle. OKs the coach to enter the field to check on his player. After both coach and ailing player leave field, ref gives a free kick to the opposing on about the 22 saying they had possesion resulting in the game winning goal.Should a drop-ball have been the proper restart?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Yes, a dropped ball should have been correct. I'll bet this ref does high school games under NFHS rules, and got mixed up.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

If FIFA laws were in effect then yes a dropball is the correct restart after play is stopped solely for an injury.
To award an indfk for a non existant technical reason is a misapplication of law, although as I now understand some places have taken it upon themselves to alter the laws of the game and allow an INDFK in these incidents woe is me!
Cheers
