You-Call-It 68 Question...Hard fought match # 4 blue was brilliant in the first half so in the 2nd half tactically #6 red is assigned to shadow his every move . The AR informs you at a stoppage that in behind play these two are jawing and pushing and at every attempt by blue to break free there is a collision of sorts between them.

Consider the why to stop the who from doing the what when you are not looking.Our Answer...I will take some blame here, perhaps the question was misleading? I REALLY wanted those responding to address the fact that TACTICALLY the response by red was to INTERFERE with blue and these collisions are a direct result of red trying to impede blue off the ball. When we referee we need to be aware that often key players are targeted to disrupt their play. While some shadowing is not a foul if there is a coming together it is quite likely that reds approach is to play the man. The AR has indicated something that you as referee should have anticipated! You should be shoulder checking when time and circumstances permit knowing the potential of tensions to escalate when teams engage in targeting key players for disruption.
In the pregame the off the ball stuff witnessed by the ARs needs to managed by either indicating to the CR what is occurring and recognizing WHO is at fault for their behavior, talking to then directly if close and in clear cases of impeding or a DFK foul holding by the defender whereas the attacker cannot simply shove or strike the close proximity opponent just because his breath stinks following him like a puppy. I am not stating the blue player is NOT guiltily of a foul but it is MORE likely the red player is!
At halftime as officials you should be remarking on the blue player who was so dominate in the first and THINK on what they might do to slow him down. Preventive thinking, anticipating issues before they arise. I give kudos for USA referee Matt Bristow for endeavouring to bring some of this to light in his response.
