Question...

The red team attacking, blue Coach calls out to the referee about an injured blue player, the referee quickly glances over and sees him tending to the player already off the field. What does the referee do? Your match! Your decision! Your reputation!

Our Hint

Our Answer...

DO? What is there to do? Keep playing! A look to the back AR perhaps to be sure you did not miss an incident. Red deserves at least the opportunity to finish the attack unless you see the blue player's head detached from the body or them doing CPR! Substitute at the next available stoppage. If the same player wants to reenter during play he must wait for the stoppage and a reminder to get permission for leaving in the first place The fact is players can be off the field as long as the referee PERMITS it . Here the referee knows the reasoning and thus grants permission after the fact allowing the leaving to go unsanctioned!

That was our Question YOUR Answer is...

Al a Referee from Strathroy ON CANADA

If injury is minor, play continues. Quick thumbs up and smile to coach, acknowledging injury. Player safety is not an issue since he has already been removed from the field.

If injury is serious, player needs best treatment possible. If that is available where he is, play can continue (play is usually restarted after a seriously injured player is removed from the field -- no need to stop play if safe removal has aleady been achieved). If trainer/doctor needs to cross field to attend to player, the referee should stop play to enable best and most expeditious treatment.

Referee situational awareness and knowledge of who serves what role (e.g. doctor) is important to establish and maintain throughout match.

Player reenters field of play with referee permission once it is clear that treatment is complete and player is ready to play. Referee should hold play at next stoppage to determine if team wishes to substitute.
