Question Number: 98

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct

RE: Under 17

Terry Koziel of Coquitlam, BC Canada asks...

Referees will indicate that it is not okay to call "Mine" during play. What rule is this supported by? Is this a rule that is used in FIFA play?

Answer provided by Referee haselden

I find it fairly common for players to communicate on the field by calling "Mine" or "you go!" and see nothing wrong with it so long as it is not done to trick an opposing player. By trickery, I mean calling "Mine" or "drop" to get an opponent to let a pass go through or actually pass the ball to them. This is covered in Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct as "Unsporting Behavior" and is a cautionable offense.

Answer provided by Referee Stacy Kalstrom

Additionally, some folks yell this loudly and in a confusing manner in order to trick or rattle an opposing player. At which time the referee may blow his whistle and issue a yellow card for unsporting behavior. The re-start is an indirect free kick to the opposing team at the place where the ball was at the time the whistle was blown.
