Question Number: 8981

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct

Steve of Southampton, England asks...

If you have a team with a player manager what happens if say during the first half the manager is abusive and you have to send him from the dugout. Would you show him the red card as a substitute or just send him away (no card) as a manager? ..Then, if you had shown no card, and the manager/player decides in the second half he wants to bring himself on is he allowed. Or is the fact that you sent him off as a manager ban him from the match as a player, or should you show him the red card as he is a substitute in the first place anyway?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Given the fact the player/manager is expelled from the technical area and will take no further part in the match it follows, logically, that you won't see him again that day. But we all know about logic and the different football leagues in the world, I would check in the league in which you referee for a definitive answer to your question... ..Regards,

To avoid what you suggest happening, send him off as a player, show the red card and he may not come back in any capacity and is ineligible the next game as a player

Answer provided by Referee Dawson

Hi Steve, .Player manager is on the roster as a player treat him as a player and work up all written reports in that vein. If he was banned as a player acting in capactity as a manager his conduct required him to be sent from the field ensure it remains so! Cheers
