Question Number: 5090Law 11 - Offside RE: rec Adult Jim Heaviside of yorba linda, CALIFORNIA USA asks...If a forward dribbles the ball the length of the field up to the goal line but too wide to shoot on goal then passes back to his team player ,who is in an offside position, who then scores,is it a goal? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Jim offside position is determined by the last but one defender or the ball, whichever is nearer the goal line, as long as the ball is in the attacking half. Right, you state that a player dribbles the length of the field up to the goal line and then passes the ball back. If the ball started on the goal line it is impossible for any attacker to be in an offside position at the moment the ball is touched or played. It is a goal...Regards,

View Referee Chuck Fleischer profileAnswer provided by Referee Powell Jim,..You say that the forward passes to his team mate who is in an "offside position" the fact is, his team mate is not in an offside position due to the position of the ball. Even if there are no defenders between the attacker, the team mate, and the goal line he is still not in an offside position. This is because an attacking player behind the ball can not be offside, only if he is infront of the ball could he be penalised, subject to other conditions of the offside Law...Keep Smiling.Steve Powell
