Question Number: 35562Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/4/2024RE: RETIRED PREMIER REFEREE Adult Ibrahim Ishiaku of Lokoja, Kogi Nigeria asks...Good day gentlemen of the whistle. QUESTION.
An attacking player is with a ball and an opponent player shouts (paaaass) and ask for a pass, the attacker with the ball now passed the ball to the opponent that requested for the pass thinking it was his team mate that asked him to pass the ball to him. What should be the referee decision if such happens in a match?

Thank you for your question.
This sort of verbal deception is unsporting behaviour, and is punishable by a yellow card and an indirect free kick from where the shout was. Same as if the player shouted 'leave it' to an opponent for the purpose of tricking them.
Under the caution offences in Law 12, we see an offence is 'verbally distracts an opponent during play or at a restart' which this falls under, and earlier in Law 12 it states that verbal offences are an indirect free kick.

What you describe is unsporting behaviour of verbally distracting an opponent during play or at a restart.
The offender is cautioned and play is restarted with an indirect free kick from where the offence took place.
