Question Number: 30349

Law 5 - The Referee 4/26/2016

RE: Competitive Under 17

Tom Chappell of San Marcos, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 30344

Maybe a better question to have asked for that situation was:

Should the referee have just blown the final whistle? He seemed to be preparing for it as he anticipated that our player was going to bury it deep on the opposing side.

In the end, we won our next game--although weirdly as the opposing coach pulled his team at 7-1 as we played for the unknown number of goals for the goal difference tie breaker--and ended up in first.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Tom
Unless time had fully expired the referee could not in all conscience end the game prematurely. If he was looking at his watch and say there was time left by his reckoning then he was obliged to see that out.
I know for me that when I go into the changing room or in my travel back from a game I never want to have the thought that I made a decision that was not 100% correct. That includes situations such as this.
