Question Number: 30266

Law 6 - Assistant Referee 4/7/2016

RE: Competitive High School

Marv of Bowmanville, Ontario Canada asks...

Just a curiosity...in a recent Champions League match a Penalty Kick was awarded. The goal line official was positioned along the goal line at the edge of the Goal Area. The AR (who would normally be positioned on the goal line at the edge of the penalty area) was not present anywhere along the goal line. Note: I could see the entire goal line between the keeper and the corner flag.

Where does the AR take position for a PK in these (6 officials) competitions??

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Marv
Page 60 covers the duties of the Additional Assistant Referee AAR. Those AAR duties cover those that would normally be covered by the regular AR at a penalty kick which includes watching for encroachment and whether the ball crosses the goal line or not.
At a PK the assistant referee should take up a position in line with the second-last defender which typically will be on the touchline directly opposite the penalty area line.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Marv,
at the elite level with the extra eyes offside is once again the AR primary role as goal line movement and the keeper off that line or ball crossing that line is the AARs responsibility.
Cheers
