RE: Rec,competititve High School

Harry Andreas of Manhattan Beach, CA United States asks...

Who assigns WC matches to particular stadiums, FIFA or the Brazilian Committee? How are those assignments made, i.e. wha criteria is used?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Harry
The selections are made by the FIFA World Cup organising committee. It is an extremely complex process where many factors have to be taken into account such as stadia capable of hosting an international game, media facilities including telecoms, hotels, transport infrastructure, safety etc.
The host nation Brazil nominated 18 stadia of which FIFA selected a final 12 Stadia for the competition.
In advance of the World Cup final draw groups games were assigned stadia, dates, times for games etc. It was then the luck of the draw as to the locations that teams would play at . For instance USA knew the locations that would used for its game the moment the draw was made. The three stadia assigned for the games were Natal, Manaus and Recife. Natal and Recife are brand new stadia while Manaus was completely refurbished. Had another team been drawn instead of USA at that time it would have played in those locations at those times.
Should USA beat Belgium the team will play the winner of Argentina v Switzerland in Brazilia.
