Question Number: 28374Law 5 - The Referee 4/27/2014Barry Stewart of Chilliwack, BC Canada asks...Re: Drop ball to defending keeper, in the penalty area. Scenario: play is whistled down, so a serious injury can be attended to. Ball was in the penalty area " in the possession of the defending team " at the time. Attacking team offers (or ref advises them) to not take part in the drop ball. Question: if the keeper is the only player in the drop ball play¦ can he pick up the ball, once it has hit the ground? My reading of the rules says YES, though it is not clearly spelled out. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Barry Once the ball touches the ground at a dropped ball it is in play and there is no restriction in the goalkeeper picking up the ball.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Jason Wright Hi Barry, While the referee can make suggestions he can't prevent any player from taking part in a drop ball - that's why it's advisable, if at all possible, to request the keeper to release the ball before stopping play. Depends on how immediately attention is required for the injury, of course. As soon as the ball touches the ground, the keeper can handle it.
