Question Number: 28361

Law 11 - Offside 4/24/2014

RE: REC, SELECT,Competive Adult

Mervin Shreve of Saint Johns, Fl United States asks...

You have two forwards running the touch lines. Forward (A1) is on side whe the ball is played to him. He then sends the ball across the field to forward(A2) who is behind player (A1) with no defender, just a goal keeperin his area. Is player(A2) offside?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Mervin
If A2 is behind the ball when kicked by A1 then there cannot be any offside as A2 is not in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. Key word in the sentence is BOTH.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

If A2 is even with or behind the ball when it was last touched by A1, A2 is onside an eligible to play the ball regardless of the position of the defenders.
