Question Number: 28358Law 5 - The Referee 4/23/2014RE: rec Other John Barry of Medford, NY USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 28334 Follow-up; if the special needs player was close enough for the 'growl' to have any effect on the kick/kicker it would seem that she was not respecting the proper distance; if it did not have any effect why call anything? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi John Shouting can have an effect even outside of 10 yards and it can be unsporting. Example can be at a penalty kick where all players are 10 yards from the ball and all players are behind the kicker with the exception of the goalkeeper. A loud shout here by the goalkeeper or a team mate can be punished once the referee deems that it is unsporting behaviour which can included distraction or acting in a manner which shows a lack of respect for the game. For example a loud swear shout might not distract the kicker but the referee is well entitled to caution for it and a retake if the kick is missed.
