Question Number: 28232

Law 11 - Offside 3/3/2014

RE: Competitive High School

William Ocampo of Missouri City, TX USA asks...

Forward A1 is in an offside position, while his teammate Forward A2 has possession of the ball outside the penalty area. Defender D1 kicks the ball away (a deliberate poke on the ball) and it goes to Forward A1 inside the penalty area. Since it was a deliberate kick by the defender, I did not call offside and an argument ensued with the coach. Who is correct?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Hi William,

What matters is whether the defender controlled the ball or not. Was it a desperate, foot-stretched lunge, or did he control it but send it in the general way of that attacker?

That's what's important here.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi William
The contact by Defender D1 is what determines the offside here. If the 'poke' is a stretch on a ball last played by A1 that results in deflection then that is not a reset of offside.
If on the other hand the poke is a challenge that plays the ball to A2 then that is not offside.
Here is an example of what I think you mean. The referee make the correct decision to wave down the offside flag as it was not offside. Green player toe pokes the ball to the Blue player in an offside position. That is not offside.
