Question Number: 28225Law 11 - Offside 3/2/2014RE: Competitive Under 13 Steve of Sudbury , Suffolk Uk asks...The attacking team plays the ball through to a player who is in an offside position, but the ball deflects off the defender's leg and goes to the offside player. Is he still offside? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Steve Yes this would be offside. A deflection or a rebound off an opponent does not reset the offside. However when a defender plays the ball that does reset. There can be a fine line between what looks like a deflection and a miss /poor play and it is up to the referee to decide. For me once the defender exerts control over the ball that puts it into the deliberate play category. A rebound or a deflection is a touch with no control.
