Question Number: 28225Law 11 - Offside 3/2/2014RE: Competitive Under 13 Steve of Sudbury , Suffolk Uk asks...The attacking team plays the ball through to a player who is in an offside position, but the ball deflects off the defender's leg and goes to the offside player. Yes this would be offside. A deflection or a rebound off an opponent does not reset the offside. However when a defender plays the ball that does reset.
There can be a fine line between what looks like a deflection and a miss /poor play and it is up to the referee to decide. For me once the defender exerts control over the ball that puts it into the deliberate play category. A rebound or a deflection is a touch with no control.

A deflection off a defender does not nullify offside. Even if the defender attempts to play the ball but is unable to control the ball, offside is not reset.
