Question Number: 28181Law 13 - Free Kicks 2/16/2014RE: Adult Olcay Sahin of Ankara, Turkey asks...When is the ball in play after a free kick by the defending team in its goal area? Should the ball to leave the penalty area? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Olcay On all kicked restarts inside the penalty for the defending team the ball must leave the penalty area. Most think that it applies only to goal kicks but not so. It applies to free kicks as well.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Law 13 requires that the ball leave the penalty area on any free kick by the defense taken from within its own penalty area. If it does not, the kick is retaken.
