Question Number: 27992

Law 5 - The Referee 11/10/2013

RE: Adult

elvis of kumasi, ghana asks...

Can the referee change his decision on the field of play in a soccer match

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
Yes any decision can be changed as long as play has not restarted or the game has been ended. So once play has restarted with the referee's permission the referee cannot go back and change his decision.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

From Law 5: 'The referee may only change a decision on realising that it is incorrect or, at his discretion, on the advice of an assistant referee or the fourth official, provided that he has not restarted play or terminated the match.'

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Hi Elvis,

The referee may change any decision until when play has restarted. I've personally done it a number of times in certain situations.
