RE: Comp and rec High School

Antonio Ortiz of Sacramento, CA USA asks...

How many games are too many to be assigned to a referee in one day before performance is affected?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Antonio
One size does not fit all and other factors have to be taken into account such as age, fitness, weather, level and length of games, effort exerted etc.
For me an openage competitive game of 90 minutes plus perhaps one underage game is the limit. I can easily do more but I find that my ability to get wide and deep falls off plus my sharpness falls off. That is unfair to the teams.
I know others who do many games that are super fit and some who just don't put in the workrate and choose to do the least necessary to complete the games.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

For myself, 2 or 3 youth games, depending on age level. More than that, my legs just don't want to move any more. And I find my attention wandering.

I've heard of others who have done 6 or 7 games in a day - I don't know how they do it.
