Question Number: 27900Law 11 - Offside 10/16/2013RE: College Harry of Changde, Hunan China asks...The 2013/2014 amendment of law 11 says A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent, who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save), is not considered to have gained an advantage. What can be seen as an act of 'deliberate save'? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Harry IFAB made this change to the interpretation of Law 11 based on the fact that in some parts of the world referees were interpreting incorrectly that a save by the goalkeeper reset offside as it was a deliberate play. Most Associations had got it correct and the recent changes confirms that. So for most there is no change here. A deliberate save is what it always has been. You can view FIFA's advice on this Law change at this site http://garcia-aranda.com/offsideifab/eng001.html

While the deliberate save is usually by the keeper, it could be done by any defender. (For example, defender on goal line heads the shot away.)
