After the ball was caught by the goalkeeper one the defenders pushes that same attacking player who was chasing the ball recklessly. So what will be the restart and punishment for him? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Santro The correct decision is a free kick or if the push happened inside the penalty area the restart is a penalty kick. If the defender pushed the attacker recklessly he would be cautioned and if he used excessive force the defender would be dismissed for violent conduct.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Jason Wright Hi Santro, While the goalkeeper is holding the ball, it is still in play. Therefore if a push occurs, it is a penal foul. So if the push occurred inside the penalty area, the restart is a penalty kick, and the defender is shown a card if required (yellow or red, depending on the severity).
