Question Number: 27636Law 11 - Offside 8/3/2013RE: competitive Adult Chriss of Italy Cross, Canada asks...Can a player be called off side on a goal kick IF the ball goes off the defender before going to you. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Chris
A player cannot be offside from any ball out of play restart. So a player cannot be offside from a goal kick, corner kick or throw in.
It makes no difference if the ball is touched by an opponent as the last touch by a team mate was the goal kick.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol The confusion arises because Law 11 says there is no offense if the player receives the ball directly from a goal kick, corner kick or throw-in. 'Directly' in this sense means 'last touch by a teammate'. An intervening touch by an opponent does not remove the directness.
This differs from the definition of 'direct' that we use for indirect free kicks.
