If the player was in an onside position when the ball is played / touched by a team mate then he cannot be offside even if he receives the ball in an offside position.
Now if the ball is deflected / touched enroute by a team mate that is the touch that determines offside.

So even a slight, unintentional deflection will mean that this is the moment when you need to think about offside. As soon as this subsequent touch occurs, what happened before is irrelevant.
