Question Number: 27244Mechanics 3/14/2013RE: Retired referee Adult Colin Pearson of Stoke, Staffs England asks...This question is a follow up to question 26898 Surely the referee should completely ignore the AAR except when there has been a controversy.
A quick glance should be sufficient - or radio signal.
When there is a controversy then presumably the AR can draw his attention if necessary and certainly the players will!
There should be no need for referee to change from normal diagonal pattern. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Colin
It would be unfair to completely ignore AARs for the duration of the game except for controvesy. They are part of the referee team and I see them confirm tight calls such as corners, goal kicks etc.
Whether it was necessary to change the normal diagonal pattern I wouldn't have thought so. But that is where it is at and approved by IFAB the law making body.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Keith Contarino The AARs are not there just to help with controversy. My understanding is they were instituted to help with goals being scored or not scored but also to aid in foul/misconduct recognition.
IMO, if given another set of professional eyes to use, would be foolish of the Referee to ignore those eyes.
