Question Number: 27097Law 10 - Method of Scoring 1/9/2013RE: Rec Adult Russell of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...Can a goal be scored from a deflection off the referee where it makes no contact with a player after the deflection? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Russell The referee is just part of play and if the ball is in play then a goal has to be awarded. If there is some reason why the ball is not in play or a goal cannot normally be awarded such as it has not left the penalty area on a kicked restart or it is an own goal directly from a kicked restart by that team or enters the goal directly from a throw in deflecting off the referee then a goal cannot be awarded. The referee should make every effort to position hinmself so a deflection does not happen

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham The referee is treated like a beautiful blade of grass. A goal can be scored if the ball in play deflects off the referee. (Note: on an indirect free kick a goal may be scored only after the ball touches 'another player' - touching the referee doesn't count.)
