Question Number: 26918

Law 11 - Offside 10/20/2012

RE: Rep Under 15

Paul of Sydney, Nsw Australia asks...

Is a player deemed offside if he receives the ball
passed by his team mate but deflected off
the opposing team ?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

He is. A lot of people seem to think otherwise, but a defensive touch does not nullify offside. Even if that defender has deliberately tried to intercept the ball but failed to control it (resulting in it still going to the attacker), that attacker would still be penalised - based on where he was when it was last touched by a teammate.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Hi Paul.
The defender must control the ball to nullify the offside infraction. A mere deflection does not do that
