Question Number: 26896Law 11 - Offside 10/11/2012RE: Adult Martin of Dartford, Kent England asks...Player of Team A plays ball to player in offside position. Intercepted by a player of Team B just 5 yards away and he takes control of the ball but then it spills out to said player of Team A in offside position. Should the receiver in Team A be given offside? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Martin The answer would depend on the skill level. At the Pro level I believe play would continue. However at lower levels I would suggest that the player did not have adequate control of the ball and 5 yards is close enough for interfering with an opponent so offside could be called.

As Ref McHugh notes, the age and skill level of the players will affect the decision. The laws were not intended to correct for mistakes made by the players.
