Question Number: 26896

Law 11 - Offside 10/11/2012

RE: Adult

Martin of Dartford, Kent England asks...

Player of Team A plays ball to player in offside position. Intercepted by a player of Team B just 5 yards away and he takes control of the ball but then it spills out to said player of Team A in offside position. Should the receiver in Team A be given offside?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Martin
The answer would depend on the skill level. At the Pro level I believe play would continue. However at lower levels I would suggest that the player did not have adequate control of the ball and 5 yards is close enough for interfering with an opponent so offside could be called.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The referee needs to judge whether the ball deflected off the Team B player (offside) or if the Team B player had clear possession and control of the ball (not offside). As Ref McHugh notes, the age and skill level of the players will affect the decision. The laws were not intended to correct for mistakes made by the players.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

From your description, no. Team B has controlled the ball. There now can be no offside infraction for Team A until a member of Team A plays or touches the ball.
