Question Number: 26837Law 11 - Offside 9/25/2012RE: Intermediate Under 12 Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...This question is a follow up to question 26789 I thought I fully understood offside after following this site for almost 2 years. Anyhow, I have some follow-up questions on this scenario. 1) Suppose when A1 (the attacker who dribbled downfield & then passed straight back) stands motionless after passing. However, he is directly in front of the GK & between A2 (who receives the pass) & the GK, which blocks the GK line of sight. At the moment A2 kicks the ball, A1 would be interfering & is also in an offside position. Would I be correct in saying that there is an offside infringement? 2) Same scenario, but A2 blasts the shot into the corner of the goal. A1 was interfering with GK's line of sight, but you know that the GK could never have stopped the shot by A2. What call would you make? Thanks again, Phil Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Phil As described in 1 & 2 those both would be offside for 'interfering with an opponent'. It makes no difference if the goalkeeper had 'no hope' because one can argue that the 'interference' affected the possibility of there being some hope of a save such as a quicker response by seeing the ball sooner or what was intended.
