Question Number: 26635

Law 11 - Offside 8/16/2012

RE: Competitive Adult

Should KNow This by now! of Xenia, OH USA asks...

During a throw-in, ball deflects off a defender and goes to an attacker (teammate of the thrower) who has been in an offside position the enture duration of this episode. Is this an offside violation?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
A player cannot be offside from a throw in and as the ball has deflected off an opponent, which makes no difference, then it is not offside. Had the ball deflected off a team mate from the throw in then a player in an offside position would be called offside when he touches the ball

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

No. A teammate cannot be offside if he receives a throw directly from a teammate. The ball hitting the defender changes nothing. Had the ball hit a teammate, offside could then be called if the ball went to a teammate that was in an offside position when the ball hit his teammate and he consequently became actively involved in play.
