Question Number: 26584Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 7/28/2012vit kozianski of shenzhen, guangdong china asks...at the kick off can a player directly take a shot at goal or does he have to move the ball forward for the player beside him to touch first???? (The teams i ref here claim it must be first touched whilst i claim they can take a direct kick) Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham A goal can be scored directly on a kick off. Few players have read the laws of the game.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi A goal can be scored directly from a kick off as per Law 8 so there is no need for a touch by a team mate. Prior to 1997 a goal could not be scored directly and many older persons involved in the game that have not kept up to date with law changes still assume that still applies.
