Question Number: 26456

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 6/15/2012

RE: Other

Per Ek of Ho Chi Minh City, HCMC Viet Nam asks...

What do you call corner, free kick, penalty etc, by one name?
Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
In communication we like to use shortened names and words that are easily said with shortened syllables. Short names are a perfect example.
In soccer players over many years have used shortened names to describe. For instance an incorrectly taken throw in is called a 'foul throw'. The term is not in the Laws but that is what players call it and everyone knows what it means.
So when someone say corner we know that the unsaid word kick is assumed

Restart. There are seven ways to restart a match: kickoff; throw-in; corner kick, free kick, goal kick; penalty kick and dropped ball.

Do you mean to ask why we may call a corner kick a 'corner' or a penalty kick a 'penalty'? Or are you asking what each of these things is using only one word? The answer here would be 'restarts'.
