Question Number: 26305

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 5/8/2012

RE: Comp. High School

jimmy cote of hearst, (Canada) Ontario Canada asks...

I was wondering how many players i am allowed to send for the coin toss. Ive seen a few videos where all the starting 11 walk up to call it. Whats the rule??

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jimmy
The Law is mute on participation at the coin toss. Clearly only one player on a team can be asked by the referee to call the toss and to make a decision on the direction of play should he win. That responsibility is usually given to the two captains of the teams.
The norm is that both captains are present for the toss and personally I see no point in any other players being there.

no rule. send all 11 if you want. Only one may call the coin toss.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Usually, it is the captain who attends the coin toss, and if there are co-captains, they all go. Before the coin is tossed, the referee will need to know which captain is going to call the toss.

While you could send all of the players out there, why on earth would one? It makes the event longer and could make it more complicated, and the whole purpose is just to see who is going to kick off or defend. Few people, fewer problems, I say!
