Question Number: 26284

Law 11 - Offside 5/3/2012

RE: 7 Adult

ray of leicester, leicestershire england asks...

This question is a follow up to question 26230

if attacking player is offside when his team mate plays the ball, if the ball goes to a diffender, who tries to pass it to his goalkeeper,if the attacker, still in offside position goes for the ball is he ganeing an advantage by being in that possition thefore is he still offside?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Ray
Once the defending team takes control of the ball offside has been reset. So unless the player in an offside position interfered with the defender as he plays the ball to the goalkeeper there is no offence.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The offside-positioned player might be interfering with the defender if he is close enough to influence how the defender plays the ball.

If the ball deflects off the defender and the offside-positioned attacker plays it, that is 'gaining an advantage'.

If the defender has a clean play on the ball and controls it, then the offside has been reset and the attacker is no longer restricted from playing the ball.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Sounds as if the defender controlled the ball so offside reset and there can be no offside
