Question Number: 26035

Law 13 - Free Kicks 3/6/2012

RE: Competive Adult

Peter Flaherty of Galway, Ireland asks...

A defender takes an indirect free kick a scores an own goal. What should I do

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Peter
A team cannot score directly on itself from any restart including an IDFK. The correct decision is a corner kick for any restart outside the penalty area. If the restart was inside the penalty area the kick is retaken as the ball is not in play until it leaves the penalty area.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Can't count as a goal for a number of reasons depending where the kick originates.
If in the penalty area and it doesn't leave the PA, the ball never in play and kick is retaken.

If kicked directly into the net fails to by definition score

Can't score on oneself directly at any restart
