Question Number: 25981Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 2/19/2012RE: Competitive Professional Harris Rasheed of Toronto, Ontario Canada asks...I was wondering who gets to call the toss specifically in the captain's coin toss, both traditionally and officially. The home team or the away team? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Harris There is no official advice on the coin toss just that a coin is tossed and the team that wins the toss decides which goal it will attack in the first half of the match. It is a matter of personal preference. The routine that I use is that I tell the team captains that Heads is the home team and Tails is the away team, I toss the coin and then ask the winning captain to decide on the direction of play. That works for me as I'm in complete control of the toss and I don't have to involve either side. Many refs ask the away captain to call, some ask the home team captain to toss or variations of that.

Personally, I allow the visiting team to call it, as a 'courtesy'. But it really doesn't matter. If it's a fair coin, each side has an equal chance of winning the toss no matter who calls it.
