Question Number: 25940Law 10 - Method of Scoring 1/30/2012RE: Competitive Other Bernard Markowitz of Los Angeles, CA USA asks...The goal keeper fields the ball on a very windy day. He punts the ball. The ball is blown backwards into his goal. Is it a goal for the opposing team?? Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright As the ball is in play (as opposed to it being a restart after the ball has gone out of play), this would be a goal.

View Referee Jason Wright profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Bernard Yes it is a goal as the ball was in play and it went into the goal. It is commonly referred to as an 'own goal'. It should however not be confused with a goal kick or a free kick. A team cannot score on itself directly from a goal kick or a free kick.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Yes it is. The ball was in play when the keeper punted it. The general rule to remember is no team may score on itself at any restart. If this had been a goal kick or a free kick and the ball had left the penalty area putting it into play and the wind blew the ball back into the net untouched by any player, there would be no goal. The restart would be a corner kick
