Question Number: 25725

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 11/8/2011

RE: Under 12

alexa of manhattan, new york United States of America asks...

During the kick-off'in what direction must a player pass the soccer ball?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

The ball must move forwards for the ball to be in play, otherwise the kick off is to be retaken. After it moves forwards, the 2nd player can kick the ball wherever he likes.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Alexa
The ball must be kicked forward at a kick off. However the distance can be minimal as to allow a team mate to pass the ball in whatever direction he/she chooses when he/she receives the ball.
The reason for this is that it is a left over from the very early laws of the game when it was called a place kick. Teams used to be given the choice of either kicking the ball forward or choice of ends much like American Football. As the game developed the teams found that keeping the ball rather than territory was more important yet the ball still had to go forward.
