Question Number: 25540Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 10/2/2011RE: middle school Under 15 Jack Maples of Putney, Vermont U.S.A asks...Hi on kickoff can you be in the circle but on the other side of the line. Thanks Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Jack Teams must be in the their own half of the field at kick off and that includes the center circle. It has become viewed as trifling where the player receiving the ball is straddling the line.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Jack: The members of the kicking team may be within the center circle, but the opponents may not. Opponents are required to be at least 10 yards from the ball at a kickoff, and the circle indicates 10 yards. The laws require that the members of the kicking team must be on their own half. As Ref McHugh notes, however, being just on the other side of the line may be ignored by the referee who deems it to be a trifling infringement. The younger the players, the more strict you may find the enforcement.
