Question Number: 25017

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 5/27/2011

RE: Rec Under 17

Keanna Hawk of Anchorage, AK US asks...

I know that when a player is injured that you must restart play with a DB but what if the goalie gets hurt inside his box. would it be a goal kick or a DB?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

You restart with a dropped ball if you stopped play solely to deal with the injury. If play stopped for another reason - say a foul that caused the injury, or the ball going over the goal line prior to you recognizing the injury - then play is restarted for that reason.

Also the location of the dropped ball is from where the ball was when play was stopped, not where the player was injured.

If the ball was inside the goal area when, the location of the restart is moved to the long edge of the goal area (the '6 yard line').

If the ball is to be dropped inside the penalty area, there is nothing to prevent the goalkeeper from picking the ball up once it touches the ground. Many teams will allow the opposing goalkeeper to do this when she has been injured while making a save.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Keanna
The goalkeeper is just like any other player and he has no special previliges other than he can handle the ball inside the penalty area.
If the referee stops play due to an injury the game is restarted with a dropped ball from the location of the ball when play was stopped. If play was stopped inside the goal area the referee drops the ball on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the ball was located.

doesn't matter. If you stop play for an injury you must restart withj a dropped ball where the ball was when you stopped play
