Question Number: 24993Law 6 - Assistant Referee 5/23/2011RE: Other Ken of Redding, CA USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 24959 In his question, Michael asked how he could position himself as AR to see the fouls that happen 'right in front of him' while also watching for offside.
Many ARs have the habit of standing right on the touch line. By standing a step or two (or three) back from the line, an AR will open his peripheral vision to a lot more action. It only takes an instant to step back up to the line if needed to judge ball out of play. Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol A very good point - thanks for the suggestion.
Another benefit of not being right on top of the line is that you can see if you are looking square to the line or not when you are judging offside positions. This is especially important if the field is set on a diagonal to the background fixtures (buildings, tree line, fence, etc) in the area.
