Question Number: 24945

Law 11 - Offside 5/14/2011

RE: Competative Under 12

Rick Miller of Clayton, NC USA asks...

Player #13 is in an offside position, player #23 shhots ball, off crossbar and is recovered by player #13. Offsides is immeadiately called. Does the offsides rule not reset when the ball strikes the crossbar, as #13 did not interfere with the play during the shot and was behind the ball when he recovered off the crossbar?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Rick
Offside does not reset on a rebound off the frame of the goal nor indeed off a opponent. Clear provision is made in Law 11 for being involved in active play under the term "gaining an advantage by being in that position"
The definition of that term is playing a ball that rebounds off a goalpost or the crossbar having been in an offside position or playing a ball that rebounds off an opponent having been in an offside position.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Offside.
A player who is in offside position is ineligible to participate in play until one of the following happens: the player is in onside position the next time a teammate touches the ball; the defense gains clear possession and control of the ball; or the ball goes out of play.

No Coach. Offside resets only when one of the following three occurs:

1. The ball is touched by a teammate
2. The ball is controlled by the opponents
3. The ball goes out of play
