Question Number: 24792

Law 11 - Offside 4/9/2011

RE: Adult

Bryan of HK, HK HKSAR asks...

This question is a follow up to question 24440

If two defenders and a striker fell down beyond the goal line after a tackle. As the striker was inactive so his other teammates will never be upside as the defenders beyond the goal line will be the last two men....am I correct? Even all of them were injured.

Thanks!

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Bryan
I assume your question refers to offside. Any defending player leaving the field of play for any reason without the referee's permission shall be considered to be on his own goal line or touch line
for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play.
So in this case the defender off the field is taken into consideration and more than likely because of his usual position the goalkeeper becomes the 2nd last defender for offside calculation.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

This happened during normal course of play so the defender off the field of play is considered to be on the goal line for purposes of offside
