Question Number: 24664

Law 11 - Offside 3/7/2011

RE: Rec Professional

Bob of St. Louis, MO 63132 asks...

An offside question. I think I am correct in saying that an attackers arms/hands are not considered when determining offside position. However, is the same true for the defender? Saw a match recently where second-to-last defender is facing his keeper, pointing directly at the keeper with a fully outstrectched arm and finger. The attacker was closer to the goal than the defender's body, but was not closer than the defender's finger. (It was easy to tell, they were standing right next to each other.) No call was made (or necessary) but it got me thinking...
thanks for a great site

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Bob
Your interpretation is correct. Clearly only parts of the body that can legally play the ball are considered for offside and that works both ways.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Why would it be different for a defender over an attacker? He can no more play the ball with his hand than the attacker, so the hands/arms are not counted in the offside position equation.
