RE: Rec Adult

Matthew Buckley of Melbourne, Victoria Australia asks...

What changes have been made to the laws of the games since the 1950's?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Matthew
The changes in the Laws of the Game can be viewed here

http://www.fifa.com/classicfootball/history/law/historylaw1.html

The principle of the game has not changed very much over the years. There has always been amendments to laws like Offside(11) Fouls and Misconduct (12) along with minor amendment to take account of changes in players' equipment, consistency in restarts, how the goalkeeper touches the ball, 4th official etc.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

A match in 1950 would look quite differently from a match played today.

There would be no substitutions. No red or yellow cards would be seen. An offside flag would go up if anyone was in offside position at the time of the kick. Defenders were permitted to pass the ball back to the keeper, whose movement while in possession of the ball was limited to a few steps.

The objective remained the same - to score a goal. But, the laws favored defenses. Most of the changes since 1950 have been to encouraged attacking play and protect those who could score.
