Question Number: 24276

Law 11 - Offside 11/3/2010

RE: Rec Under 19

Jayson Rickel of Tucson, AZ USA asks...

I have just always been curious as to where the ball is placed after an offside has been called. Is it where the last defender was? Or is it where the offside player was when the ball was kicked?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The restart is where the player in offside position was located at the moment that the ball was touched or played by the teammate.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jayson
The IDFK is awarded from the place where the infringement
occurred that is where the player in the offside position was located when the ball was played/touched by his team mate.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Where it is supposed to go, and where it goes are not always the same. Too many referees either don't know that it is supposed to go where the OSP player was when the ball was last touched by a teammate, don't care (this is especially painful), or find it to be a trifling enforcement in some situations. Finding the exact spot to be a trifling matter is acceptable - the first two excuses are not.
