Question Number: 24056Law 13 - Free Kicks 10/1/2010RE: Select Under 18 Nader Ghoujeghi of Novi, Michigan U.S.A asks...If there is a free kick inside the Penalty box, does it have to leave the box before it can be considered as in-play?
Examples: Off-side, dangerous play, etc. Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Yes, for outbound kicks. See Law 13, which has almost the exact same wording as Law 16. Everyone knows the goal kick has to leave the penalty area; so few know it applies to every outbound free kick.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Law 13 covers all kicks by the defense from inside their own penalty area. If the ball is touched (by any player) before it leaves the PA and enters the field of play, the kick must be retaken.
