Question Number: 23997Law 1- The Field 9/23/2010RE: High School Chase of Hamilton, OH USA asks...Our team always stands when they are on the bench. At this particular game, the ref came over and said our team can not stand and forced us to sit down. Our coach didn't agree and the ref said it is a rule. So he made the players sit down. Is this a rule? THANKS! LOVE YOUR SITE!!! Your site has helped me call great games!! Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Chase The referee is correct. Only one person can stand in the technical area to convey tactical instructions at any one time. Indeed until this year that person had to sit down again after conveying the instructions. FIFA has changed that as most coaches did not return to their seats and it did cause problems for the referee in implementing the original rule hence the change.
