Question Number: 23985Law 11 - Offside 9/21/2010RE: Adult Rec Adult Ron of Hagerstown, MD USA asks...Keeper gathers the ball and decides to punt it. If I am in an offside position and touch the ball 1st, is that an offside penalty? Drop kick change any thing? Throwing it change any thing? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Ron A player can only be offside from a pass / touch of the ball from a team mate. So a player cannot be offside from a ball played by an opponent with the exception of a rebound/deflection off a ball played by a team mate. So in the situation where a goalkeeper punts the ball forward to a team mate that is offside even if it deflects off a defender. A player cannot be offside from any throw in or from a goal kick

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Are you the goalkeeper's teammate or opponent? If opponent, you have no offside considerations because offside only applies when the ball is last touched by a teammate. If you are the keeper's teammate, then offside does apply. If you are in an offside position - attacking half of the field, ahead of 2nd to last opponent, and ahead of the ball - then you cannot play a ball distributed by the goalkeeper no matter if she throws or kicks it to you.
