View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh hi Juan A whistle is needed to start the game. The whistle alerts all players that the referee has given permission for the game to start and it starts when the ball is kicked forward. If say a goal was scored directly from the kick off without a whistle the team would complain bitterly that it was not ready and the referee has a match control issue straight away.
